Kathleens Public Comments-BHEC Council Meeting 2-17-26

Kathleens Public Comments
Many counselors we know are having trouble filling their calendars and making ends meet and we've identified several compounding reasons:
1. Inflation has reduced discretionary money for self-pay clients.
2. Deductibles are still through the roof.
3. EAP's paying poorly, not keeping up with inflation, and even cancelling providers for imaginary future offenses.
4. The vertical consolidation of healthcare and the turn to AI and Headway style programs that don't pay well.
5. Unprofessional online activity by activist licensees witnessed by the public, resulting in...
6. A seismic lack of public trust.
Guilt by Association and the PR Problem
Our profession has a massive public relations problem. Half of our licensees proudly count themselves Social Justice Warriors and are currently being blamed IN THE MEDIA for greenlighting the chemical and surgical mutilation of our kids. This problem will get worse as more professional associations reverse course on their recommendations, as Phillip mentioned.
The PROBLEM is those of us who believe this behavior is demonic are being lumped in with the offending counselors. That's having a negative financial impact on our practices. Our profession has become the public gatekeeper for the child mutilation industry.
How Do We Help the Public?
So how does Joe Citizen find a counselor who bases their practice on classical evidence-based treatment?
There are fractured attempts by counselors to create public databases of non-woke counselors but informing the public costs money and will remain problematic. There's currently no good way for the public to identify a classically trained therapist from a "SJ activist with a mental health license".
The Internal Attacks Must Stop
Second, how do we prevent the very public, very one-sided attack on classically trained counselors?
Dare to question GAC and you'll face a rash of negative reviews on your Google, Yelp and other online platforms as well as threats of bodily harm. These childish, 1-Star postings by licensed adults aren't even clients!
Their sole purpose is to drive business away from the targeted counselor's practice and while that may be prosecutable in a court of law, WHO has the money to pursue that??
Other medical boards have ethics regulations in place to prevent this through the threat of loss of licensure. I'd like to see all four boards consider doing the same because this IS an ethics issue. This has got to stop and it WON'T stop until they're held accountable and it hurts.
A licensee is allowed to believe whatever they want but they are not allowed to run afoul of the law and the TX Code of Ethics, or intentionally harm another's practice. There must be consequences or this will never end.
Thank you for listening.
