Fervent Prayer Is A Wonderful Thing, But…

Fervent Prayer | Association for Mental Health Professionals

Sometimes fervent prayer is all we can do. Most of the time action on our part is the other variable in the equation and it's often put aside in favor on waiting on God to deliver the desired outcome.

Spoiler Alert: He's good with you having what you want but He's also waiting on you to get off your knees and go get it.

Here's The Real Problem

No one wants to say it out loud but there is a chasmic divide in the mental health profession. There are those who were trained to help people using tools based on evidence-based science and accountability. The other group has been trained in recent years to provide something passing as care based on ideological principles and enabling affirmations.

How Did We Get Here?

We find ourselves in this conflict of the minds because we allowed it to happen one drip at a time. We allowed our family structure to be destroyed. We watched as the pulpits in our spiritual institutions were claimed by heretics. We allowed our primary school system to be undermined, teaching sex-based politics instead of history, civics, and critical thinking.

We decided we didn't have time to stop and vote in the local school board elections so we threw our kids to the wolves. We blinked when our higher education campuses were claimed and the professors replaced by Marxist activists.

We didn't even notice when adherents of the affirming-care movement infiltrated our licensing boards because, who attends those things anyway? And we acted shocked when our legislatures passed (unconstitutional) laws banning requested speech in our counseling sessions.

Bad Guys Count on Complacency

One of the downsides to living in a country with over 350 million people is that there always seems to be one or two people willing to get off the couch and "do something about it". So we let them. The rest just pray about it, but sometimes that's not enough.

Fervent Prayer plus Action Is Required (Sound Familiar?)

I'm a Christian and I pray just as much as the next believer but not for one minute do I believe that Jesus wants me to just pray and do nothing else. His last marching orders to his followers were to get up off their backsides and get to work. If that makes me unpopular well I don't really care. If it makes you uncomfortable, that's all about you.

Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

We Are Called to Defend the Kingdom

We have a very deep, very real problem in our profession, in our country, and it will be fixed by people who pray, a lot, then get up and do things that will likely make them unpopular and uncomfortable in order to fix it. Staying in our safe professional lanes worrying about what others think is how we got here.

No one went to school to become an advocate or activist, including Kathleen or me, but when your castle is under attack we all need to take up positions at the ramparts and defend what's ours. Or lose the castle.
